The Drawbacks of Isolation – Loneliness in the Social Gaming World

Written by: Avid

As games have gotten more popular, players are more alone than ever!

While the convenience of jumping into a matchmaking queue and swiftly diving into action is undoubtedly appealing, this paradigm shift in gaming culture has come at a cost. Loneliness now permeates the virtual corridors of even the most populated gaming spaces.

We all have those friends on Steam who were last online thousands of days ago, and somehow we miss those friends a lot more than we do the tons of people we add and never play with again despite being able to. The fleeting nature of encounters, the absence of repeat interactions, and the lack of opportunities for meaningful connections have left many players feeling adrift in a sea of faceless usernames. It’s become common to have 200+ friends on Steam but only speak to one or two.

Offline Friends

I’ll use another example from my own world and experience. Successful Rust YouTubers like Welyn, Spoonkid, Blooprint and many more, all share one thing in common. Their most popular videos are Solo experiences. So let’s explore the question, what is so appealing in watching a solo experience that three different content creators (and more) who, despite having different playstyles, find their greatest success in sharing their solitary adventures?

As these YouTubers embark on their lone adventures, viewers are captivated by their vulnerability and resourcefulness, finding inspiration in the triumphs and empathy in the defeats. Watching someone play solo resonates deeply with an audience yearning for a sense of belonging, many of whom lack friends to play with themselves. Viewers can easily relate to the struggles of a solo player as themselves are often, at max, a solo/duo/trio. This is one of the main reasons why videos with 20+ members do not perform as well. So few people play with that large of a group!

Conclusion: Rust solo videos are appealing to the larger audience of gamers who feel alone and can relate

Despite being surrounded by millions of other players, gamers find themselves more alone than ever. The absence of consistent companionship and the diminishing chances of establishing meaningful connections have contributed to feelings of isolation and disconnection. As the gaming population grows larger, players are paradoxically becoming more isolated, longing for the sense of belonging and kinship that were once hallmarks of multiplayer gaming.
